Propel NY Energy in the Town of Hempstead

All mileage and routing are preliminary.

Propel NY Energy is a 90-mile, six-segment transmission improvement project across parts of Long Island, Queens, Bronx and Westchester County. Transmission lines carry electricity long distances, from where it is generated to the distribution lines that bring it to homes and businesses.

A portion of three segments are proposed in the Town of Hempstead, totaling approximately 12 miles of new underground transmission line through the Town, and in or adjacent to three villages, and a new substation on utility-owned property.

A project route was proposed in the July 2024 Article VII permitting application. In April 2025, viable alternative routes were identified in response to extensive input from local stakeholders — including municipalities, community organizations, and civic groups — and represent potential pathways to achieve the project’s objectives. These routes were further evaluated for inclusion in the Project’s permitted route. On June 25, 2025,  Preferred Project Routes in Nassau County were filed to the Article VII application with the New York State Public Service Commission for continued permitting evaluation.

Why is Propel NY Energy Needed?

  • A robust electric transmission network is fundamental to power our daily lives. It also supports healthier communities, and jobs and economic opportunity.

  • Electricity use is increasing and placing more demands on an aging system.

  • New York’s transmission system requires upgrades and expansion to improve reliability and create the resilient  pathways needed to deliver clean energy to local communities and throughout the state.

When Will the Project Begin?

  • Pending regulatory approvals, construction is estimated to begin in 2026, with a 2030 in-service date. Construction will be done in short durations in specific areas across the full project.
